From 23 to 25 September 2025, the DecarbonDHS consortium was visiting Bornholm, Denmark, engaging in two impactful events that highlighted the region’s commitment to sustainable energy and cross-border cooperation.
Partner Meeting and Site Visit: 23 September
The tour began with a DecarbonDHS partner meeting in Rønne (Fig. 1,2), where consortium members shared project updates and coordinated next steps in the journey to decarbonize district heating systems across the South Baltic region.

In the afternoon, partners explored Bornholm’s innovative energy infrastructure through a series of site visits, including:
- the combined heat and power plant at the Port of Rønne, operated by Bornholms Energi & Forsyning (BEOF),
- the biomass-fueled CHP plant in Hasle, powered by locally sourced straw and wood, and
- the Bornholm Energy Island exhibition, showcasing the island’s ambitious vision for a sustainable energy future.
Special thanks to our Danish partner BEOF, and especially Christian Nygaard Sørensen, for organizing the visit and sharing valuable insights into Bornholm’s energy transition efforts.
Interreg South Baltic Annual Event: 24–25 September
Further, it gives us pleasure to inform that DecarbonDHS also participated in the 2025 Interreg South Baltic Programme Annual Event, held at the Green Solution House in Rønne (Fig. 3). The event gathered over 100 participants to celebrate 35 years of Interreg cooperation, exchange ideas, and strengthen regional partnerships.

Our project was featured during the Green Transition study visits, where attendees visited the Østerlars Heat Plant in Gudhjem. It was a great opportunity to showcase our work and connect with other projects driving sustainability in the South Baltic region.
We’re grateful to the organizers and fellow participants for an inspiring event and look forward to continuing our collaboration towards a climate-neutral South Baltic.
