District Heating Transformation Discussed at Energy Network Event in Kaunas

On 9 December 2025, Kaunas University of Technology (KTU) hosted the event “The Transformation of the District Heating Sector as an Integral Part of Sustainable Energy”. The event was organized by Kaunas University of Technology, the Lithuanian Energy Institute (LEI), and the Lithuanian District Heating Association, and formed part of the Energy Network event series (Fig. 1).

The event focused on key challenges and future pathways for the transformation of the district heating sector. Insights and practical experiences were shared by Dr. Valdas Lukoševičius, President of the Lithuanian District Heating Association, Agnė Bagočiutė, Director of the Lithuanian Energy Agency, as well as representatives of the Alytus and Jonava district heating networks, among others.

During the event, Dr. Rimantas Bakas (LEI) presented ongoing EU-funded projects implemented at the Lithuanian Energy Institute that address the transformation of district heating systems, including the Decarbonisation of District Heating Systems (DECARBONDHS) project (Fig. 2).

The event brought together more than 60 participants, including representatives from the Lithuanian District Heating Association, the National Energy Regulatory Authority, the Lithuanian Energy Agency, district heating companies, the electricity transmission system operator Litgrid, other energy sector organizations, and the academic community.
