
On 10 June 2026, IWEN Energy Institute gGmbH, a partner in the DecarbonDHS project, participated in the “Intelligent Power Grids” conference in Rostock, Germany. The event was organised by the Landesverband Erneuerbare Energien Mecklenburg-Vorpommern (LEE MV) and brought together representatives from industry, municipalities, research organisations and policymakers to discuss the future of energy infrastructure and the integration of renewable energy sources.
The conference featured expert presentations on the development of intelligent electricity grids, renewable energy integration and the role of energy storage in the transition towards climate-neutral energy systems. While the main focus was on the electricity sector, many of the discussions highlighted the strong links between electricity and district heating, particularly in the context of sector coupling and municipal energy planning.
During the event, Jonathan Aschenbrenner from IWEN engaged in discussions with participants on the importance of coordinating electricity grid development with the decarbonisation of district heating systems. He presented the objectives of the DecarbonDHS project and exchanged views on how cross-sector planning, flexible grid infrastructure and technologies such as large-scale heat pumps, power-to-heat systems and thermal energy storage can support the transition to sustainable district heating.
The conference provided an excellent opportunity to connect with stakeholders from across Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, exchange experiences and discuss how integrated planning can help unlock the full potential of renewable energy. Participation in the event further strengthened the visibility of the DecarbonDHS project and reinforced the importance of cooperation between the electricity and heating sectors in achieving climate neutrality across the Baltic Sea Region.
