DecarbonDHS present at Folkemødet 2026

DecarbonDHS project was represented at Folkemødet 2026 by project partner Bornholms Energi & Forsyning (BEOF), who showcased the project alongside several other Interreg South Baltic Programme projects (Fig. 1). Held annually on the Danish island of Bornholm, Folkemødet is one of Denmark’s largest public democracy and networking events. This year’s edition attracted approximately 100,000 visitors over three days, bringing together politicians, organisations, companies, researchers, and citizens to exchange ideas, share knowledge, and discuss solutions to societal challenges.

At the event, BEOF presented DecarbonDHS together with the Interreg South Baltic projects: Baltic Enershift, ISMA, and Baltic Grow. The exhibition was organised in cooperation with NaturBornholm, Bornholms Affaldsbehandling (BOFA), and representatives of the Bornholm EU Office, highlighting how European cooperation projects contribute to local development and innovation on Bornholm while generating benefits for the wider Baltic Sea Region.

The DecarbonDHS poster (Fig. 2)  introduced visitors to the project’s work on smarter and more flexible district heating systems. By making use of existing district heating networks and smart metering solutions, the project explores new ways to improve the management of heat demand and production. These approaches can help reduce CO₂ emissions, optimise energy use, and support the transition towards more sustainable district heating systems across the South Baltic region.

Participation in events such as Folkemødet provides valuable opportunities to engage with stakeholders, exchange experiences, and raise awareness of the role that cross-border cooperation can play in advancing the energy transition.

The DecarbonDHS partnership would like to thank Bornholms Energi & Forsyning for successfully representing the project and contributing to discussions on sustainable energy solutions and the future of district heating.
