On 16–17 June 2026, partners of the DecarbonDHS project met in Kretinga, Lithuania, for the project’s Mid-Term Meeting, hosted by Kretinga District Municipality, Kretinga District Heating Company, and the Lithuanian Energy Institute (LEI). A key part of the meeting was a series of study visits showcasing different approaches to sustainable heat generation and district heating operation in Lithuania.
On the first day, Partners discussed project implementation and case studies progress as well as the participation in Study Tour & Workshops in Lund/Helsingborg, Oct 6-8. Later, they visited the automated biomass boiler house in Salantai, where wood chips are used to provide reliable and highly automated heat generation. The facility features mechanised fuel handling, advanced combustion technology, and automated ash extraction.
The group also toured the main boiler house in Kretinga, which supplies the majority of the town with heat and hot water, providing valuable insights into the operation of modern district heating infrastructure.

The second day took partners to Klaipėda, where they visited the central district boiler house of AB Klaipėdos energija. The visit offered a closer look at one of the city’s key heat supply facilities and highlighted the role of modern district heating systems in supporting the energy transition.
The study tour continued at GREN Klaipėda, a municipal solid waste (MSW) incineration combined heat and power (CHP) plant that converts non-recyclable waste into heat and electricity. The visit demonstrated how energy recovery technologies can contribute to reducing fossil fuel dependency while ensuring a secure and efficient heat supply.
The discussions throughout the meeting highlighted the importance of combining different technologies and local resources to create resilient, low-carbon district heating systems. In addition to technical exchanges and site visits, partners also recorded a series of short interviews that will soon be shared through the project’s communication channels, providing insights into the expertise and experiences of the DecarbonDHS partnership.
The consortium would like to express its sincere gratitude to Kretinga District Municipality, Kretinga District Heating Company, and the Lithuanian Energy Institute for the excellent organisation of the meeting and for facilitating two productive days of learning, knowledge exchange, and collaboration. This meeting provided an opportunity to review the project’s progress, discuss ongoing activities across all work packages, and plan the next implementation steps. Partners exchanged info on technical, administrative, and communication activities, ensuring continued implementation of the project’s objectives.
